Toledo Needs to Experiment

Only an EAR night can bring Toboggan back from the brink of an almost week-long sabbatical. Going strong for two years now, there was definitely a period of time in which the EAR night was a monthly staple for me. Not for the weak-hearted, these noise/drone/anything & everything goes shows represent a very real Toledo experimental music scene, that you should be a part of.

Very special guests of honor include Madam P (not sure if the promo flyer is a typo or what) and the Giants of Gender . Hot off the heels of a show at MOCA Cleveland, Madam P is reason enough to stop out. Here are links to the rest (Gabe hooked us up with links).

Toledo v. Toledo, Washington

This is almost unfair. I mean, the first non-road map image of Toledo, Washington that comes up while Google image searching is a ruptured pipeline (above).

But they've had it coming to them for awhile. Not only does Toledo Washington share a birthday with World Mental Health Day, it's also national Tom Cruise day in Japan. Covering an area of just 0.3 square miles (Wildwood Metropark is 0.7 square miles), the population could fit into 5/3 Field almost fifteen times over.

And while they may seem to have a leg up with only one registered sex offender in town, Stephen Maxwell Bell's got nothin' on our own lovable scamp, Brian Peppers. Ohio wins.

I would also like to take this opportunity to ask anyone with a copy of the St. John's versus Southview basketball game that aired on BCSN during the end of December to post a clip. Jaws dropped as my friends and I heard an announcer, with less than thirty seconds left in the game, state that the match was going to come down to 'which team is the most mentally challenged'. Hilarious.

Toledo Museum of Art: Love You Hardcore

My Toledo's Butter than Your's

I've heard a lot of griping about the 'Most Livable City' award lately, so Toboggan has decided to set it's sights a little lower- how about the 'Most Livable City Named Toledo' award?

The beating starts in Toledo, Iowa, where a local woman has created a Barack Obama sculpture out of butter. Toledo, Ohio wins for two reasons here: our artists make Obama sculptures that don't melt. And with the abundance of nicotine fans in Ohio, we're smart enough to know that much butter is way dangerous for a guy like Obama. Smoking and high cholesterol only lead to one thing.

Stay tuned for future Toledo v Toledo matches, there's plenty more where that came from- I'm looking at you, Spain.

www.toledotoboggan.blogspot.com is Dead, Long Live www.toledotoboggan.com!

Rohn really spoiled Toboggan this year for Christmas. Not only did Toboggan receive a new domain name, but he also printed up cards. So the website formerly found at http://www.toledotoboggan.blogspot.com/, has been relocated to http://www.toledotoboggan.com/.

I'll wait while everyone updates their bookmarks (or in Rohn's case, their homepage) ...

...As you can see from the above photograph, the only problem now is which card will rule them all. You see,
Rohn printed up 50 of ten different styles (flashback to the business card scene in American Psycho,

) so collect them all.

I also spruced up the Myspace page.

PSA: Splish Splash Rehash

I really don't even know where to begin. Seems earlier this year some really great street art got messed up by a really not-so-great person (NY Mag article). No one knew who 'the splasher' was, but suspicions arose at a Shepard Fairey opening in June when a guy was caught trying to light a stink bomb (Art Lovers NY article). After a long and diligent investigation the finger pointing landed squarely on two young men: James Cooper and Zac Dempster.

What does any of this have to do with anything you ask? Well if we look a little closer we see that both of the accused are from Toledo! Zac's Flickr account shows a home town of Toledo, and he also used to write for Clamour Magazine, while James' myspace claims that he is a 'Dick Helmut, Ohio' native, and shows that he is terrible actor.

As a public service to artists I would encourage you to keep both men away from your work. I know the one kinda looks like Harry Potter so you could be fooled into thinking he's a good guy- but he's not! I personally invite either men to contact me with their side of the story.

SUBJECT: Only 30 copies left of INVASION OF THUNDERBOLT PAGODA dvd
It took 38 years, but Ira Cohen’s cult film, “The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda,” which was first screened in 1968 at the high point of the psychedelic hippie head rush, is now commercially available. Given the close calls, the long absences and his chaotic archival system, Mr. Cohen, 71, is a little surprised himself. “It didn’t really involve patience,” he said in his apartment on West 106th Street in Manhattan, surrounded by books stacked waist high. “It was just reality.”
In 1961 Mr. Cohen built a room in his New York loft lined with large panels of Mylar plastic, a sort of bendable mirror that causes images to crackle and swirl in hypnotic, sometimes beautiful patterns. After a few years experimenting with the technique in photographs, he invited his friends from the downtown scene like Beverly Grant, Vali Myers and Tony Conrad — to make a film. The finished product sets languid images of opium smokers (in fantastic makeup and costumes) against a droning, chanting, tabla-beating soundtrack by Angus MacLise, the original drummer of the Velvet Underground. Xavier Garcia Bardon, film curator at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, said the film is an important artifact of the era.“It’s like going on an ecstatic journey to another planet, full of magical beings, animals and plants,” he said. “It’s a hallucinatory, almost trance-inducing experience.”

Toledo Takes Third in Most Livable Competition

We totally took care of business in the steel cage match with Edogawa, but unfortunately fell short during the flaming hell in a cell. Still, it's good to be third- although there seems to be some debate going on at the Glass City Jungle site. Toboggan says- if you really are that bitter about your city winning an award, quit whining and move to Akron.

Holiday Shopping Reminder for Everyone not Already Lined-Up at Best Buy

Just a quick reminder to check out the faculty/student art sale at the museum tomorrow and Saturday. All funds go to the TMA School of Art and Design. I've also learned that the art classes make good Christmas gifts- especially for little ones. They offer everything from blacksmithing to digital photography.

If you hate art but love books I got news for you too. There will also be a lecture and book signing on Saturday to coincide with the David Macaulay exhibit. Macaulay will talk at 1:00 with the book signing immediately afterwards. Check out the GlassWear exhibit while you're there.

Still need gift ideas? How about this cool shirt that benefits the Arts Commission.

KATIE HOLMES SHOCKER!

Katie Holmes was shocked earlier today after finding out that she failed to make Omar's 'Top Ten Influential Toledoans' list. She couldn't be reached for comment, but she's already trying to clean up her act- makeover style.

Seriously though, even without Holmes the list is a nice quick history lesson- that'll have you and your buddies up all night arguing whether or not Congressman James Mitchell Ashley deserved that number three spot (dude had a hip hop presentation on his life preformed- what's to argue?).

COSI to Possibly Close by the End of the Year- Funds Seem to be Stuck on a Bike Suspended Above the Lobby

It just boggles the mind as to why the COSI levy never, ever passes.

You Look Sharp, Toledo

Toboggan was happy to hear from it's good buddy John the other day. Being the studious brobot that he is, John likes to keep up on the Gentleman's Quarterly, and he was happy to inform me that Toledo was mentioned as a city of interest in their Midwest art guide.
The November 07' issue has Ryan Gosling on the cover, and also mentions Columbus, Dayton, Pittsburgh and the like. I have yet to find an online transcript, but hopefully I can scan the article by the end of the weekend.
Ok the Pavilion was in Vogue, named best new museum by Travel + Leisure, and now GQ wants a part of the action. Everyone else knows we're hep, why doesn't anyone who lives here?
